Groton, CT Massage Therapist for Pain-Relief: Why Choosing the Right Therapist and the Right Treatment is Important for Relief from Chronic Pain
March 18, 2017
As one of the only Massage Therapy businesses in the area that specializes in pain-relief, we are concerned about Chronic Pain Sufferers in the area not getting the right massage to get them out of pain.
How do you find a CREDIBLE Massage Therapist in your area?...
Credibility is by far the most important factor when deciding on the right massage therapist. You need to verify that you are seeing a Licensed Massage Therapist who has experience in dealing with pain-relief issues. What makes a Licensed Massage Therapist different from a Certified Massage Therapist? It means that they understand the human anatomy, massage modalities, different medical conditions, and the other knowledge necessary to pass a National Exam. It also means that they are receiving continuing education each year to meet state requirements which will maintain their Licensure. Why is this important to you the client? Well if a therapist doesn't have enough understanding to meet those requirements, then how in the world do they have enough understanding to know what your body needs? Look for simple words like “Pain Relief”, “Pain Management”, “Deep Tissue”, or “Sports Massage”. This helps to find a specialist in the field you are searching for.
Look for CREDIBLE Reviews...Google, Yelp, and Facebook Reviews are a great way to start when looking for reviews on what other clients have experienced during sessions with a Massage Therapist. Take the time to see if there are other reviews posted to their website or their booking software. Why is this important information for you? Reviews that are submitted through a booking software verifies that a client booked a session, attended a session, and paid for their session in order to get an email to leave a review. This confirms the authenticity of the treatment they received. For more information, please check out my Blog "Why my 5 star reviews on Massagebook mean so much to me."
Call them! Take the time to do a phone interview with a potential massage therapist. Be a little patient because if they don't answer then they are probably with a client. You should leave a message and they should get back with you in a reasonable amount of time. Ask questions about what type of massage they would recommend and perform for you. You will have questions about what bodywork treatment would be best for you, ask them! If they are experienced and know what they are doing, then they will provide thorough answers that specify what you need. If the company has a receptionist who is just a receptionist,
ask to have an experienced therapist call you back. If a therapist is truly qualified, then they will be happy to answer any questions you may have before your session. Just be respectful that 5 minutes may be all the time they can spare between clients. Ask them about other clients who have had the same problem, and how they achieved the best results. If a therapist is inexperienced, you will be able to tell during the conversation.
Pricing can tell you a lot! The average price of a massage in Groton, CT is $65 for 50 Minutes. Some offer a discount for Military. As an Active Duty Spouse, I give 10 extra minutes free on a 50 Minute session or I offer 10% off for a longer session. Why? Because I know what drill weekends, PT tests, and sleeping on a cot do to the body. If someone is offering a Groupon special, I will guarantee you are probably going to get a mediocre massage at best and it could possibly worsen your condition. This is the hard to accept truth. Any place offering large constant discounts are seeking quantity rather than quality. I know that I am worth every penny I charge for my time. Why? Go check out my continuing education...It says that I spend my free time studying and gaining experience so that I can provide the highest quality service, and my reviews confirm it. Be wary of spas charging more...you're paying for the ambiance! I don't know about you, but paying more for the experience isn't worth it to me when I'm in pain.
Chronic Pain isn't made in 50 minutes! What does that mean? Well if you've been in pain for any length of time, it means that it took time for you to get there. If you've been sitting at a desk for at least 5 hours a day for weeks on end, then I'm sorry it can't be undone in 50 minutes. If you've been working out in the gym or doing yoga to get in shape, but you've been doing the wrong exercises or over stretching a cold muscle. IT'S NOT GOING TO BE UNDONE IN 50 MINUTES. If you've had multiple surgeries that were supposed to solve whatever issue caused your pain, well you now have scar tissue and it is probably in more than one spot. NEW FLASH! Scar tissue creates a whole new set of problems that are adding to your pain. You are going to have to invest in stopping the pain! How? You ask. Well, you're gonna have to put in the time.
Long term results mean investing in Yourself! Investing in Yourself means that you're willing to stop the pain before it can assert itself back into your daily life. What do I mean? Well your body unfortunately believes that your pain is normal. This is why the pain comes back within a week of getting a massage. It means that the incorrect posture that you sit in at work is now normal posture for you. It means that working the wrong muscles out in the gym have been strangling the muscles that needed the workout. It means that over stretching cold muscles during yoga have activated pain receptors in your tendons and muscles and now they have to be retrained. It means that those scars have now become so thick and attached to surrounding tissue that it will take time to make them mobile. I know you don't want to hear that, but IT'S THE TRUTH!
How can you retrain your body to a new NORMAL that PAIN FREE? We have to find the root of the problem and retrain it. This also means that after a session we need to have another session before your body tries to take you back to what it considers NORMAL. We have to interrupt the cycle! BTW...the pain-spasm-pain cycle has your brain working in overdrive to cause you MORE PAIN! A Chiropractor will suggest that clients see him for multiple sessions as first for the same reason, so will a Physical Therapist. You believe them when they tell you that multiple sessions are necessary, so why doesn't the same hold true for Massage Therapy?
But the Chiropractor and Physical Therapy didn't work! I can't tell you how many times I've heard this from clients who stopped going to a chiropractor and physical therapy because they found massage therapy with me to be more effective. I'm not recommending that you stop seeing your Chiropractor or stop going to Physical Therapy if your doctor has prescribed it. I'm telling you that if its MUSCLE related injury, then I SPECIALIZE IN MUSCLES! My talent lies in being able to palpate your muscles and find what they are hiding. Would you see and Eye Doctor for a Stomach Issue? Use your common sense. I'm a MUSCLE Specialist, it's what we do every day! Other Specialist can add to what I'm doing if its done properly but they can't do what I do with the Laser Precision that I have.
So what is this Investment Going to Cost Me? Well, I'm glad you finally asked. I recommend doing the all the above suggestions to make sure you've found the right therapist for you. Book a first session for whatever amount of time you would like. Why a first session? Initial investment to make sure you have the right therapist. How will you be able to tell? Well they are going to find those “hot spots”, the painful areas on your body that are body tormenting you. If you're in pain and tell them where you hurt, they should be at least be finding specific points in that area and you should walk out feeling better. But a true Pain-Relief Specialist is going to tell you to expect the pain to return and they are going to recommend further sessions to truly get to the heart of where the pain is coming from. They are going to suggestion a TREATMENT PLAN! How can you stop the cycle without a PLAN?
What's the best PLAN for You? Every one is different but part of the PLAN is how much are you willing to INVEST towards getting RELIEF. A good treatment plan should start with at least twice a week for the first 2 weeks. This interrupts your body returning to what it thinks is NORMAL, which right now mean PAIN! This time should also include some homework for you to do on your own. Homework can be anything from using a tennis ball on trigger points to stretching or even exercises for specific muscles. You should start to feel a difference in those 2 weeks. Unfortunately you pain have to feel some pain during recovery before feeling relief, this is because your muscles are being trained. If you are starting to feel more mobility, less pain, and a measurable difference, then you can go longer between sessions. Sessions can then go to once a week for a few weeks. This gives you time to observe what's happening in your body. Only you know if you are feeling the results for a longer period of time in between sessions. If you are doing the suggested homework at home, you will see better results from your treatment plan. As time progresses, you should be able to go as far out as once a month. Once a month is a good recommendation for staying pain free. Why should you keep going once a month if you're pain free? Well, it gives your therapist an opportunity to work those other areas that you will start to feel once other areas start to feel better. As you progress, the best any of us can with for is to have a full hour spent on our whole body without a single knot, ropey band or tight muscle being found.
WARNING: You will be feeling so good that you will think you can go out and try new sports or activities. You will want that new healthy and happy feeling to stay with you and you will know what got you the BEST RESULTS! I call that job security!
